Instructor of Persons with Developmental Disabilities (Paddle All Leader)
Salary up to $20+/hour depending on qualifications, 30 hours per week, 10 weeks
The Paddle All program offers adults with special needs the opportunity to learn the sport of sprint canoe and kayak in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. The instructor reports to the Head Coach and Paddling Director and supervises and coordinates summer camp staff and volunteers. The Paddle All Instructor has a secondary role as waterfront concierge ensuring that club members, visitors, and the general public are greeted and oriented to the waterfront in a respectful, professional, and friendly manner, and looks after the equipment and facilities on the Gatineau River.
Roles & Responsibilities:
• Ensuring that Paddle All programming is integrated with the guidelines outlined in the Canadian Sport for Life Long-Term Development Framework.
• Coordinates and leads participation of Paddle All team members in local, regional, national, and - if the opportunity arises - international regattas;
• Providing technical instruction for canoe and kayak (and related water sports);
• Verifying swimming ability and ensuring that participants are safe on (and in) the water;
• Leads the implementation of the Paddle All Program - for adults with developmental disabilities.
• Ensuring compliance with the Club’s safety regulations and Code of Conduct.
• Completing training in the Club’s safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Being a positive role model, and setting the tone for a respectful, cooperative and fun environment.
• Assisting the Head Coach with administrative and organizational tasks;
• Performing waterfront opening and closing procedures;
• Managing the safe circulation of camp groups in compliance with Club safety policies.
• Ensuring that all Club equipment is properly maintained and Club property is kept tidy.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Bilingual: French and English
Canadian Red Cross Standard First-Aid and CPR/AED “C” or equivalent (before start date)
NCCP Community Coach certification (before start date)
Pleasure Craft Operator’s Certification (before start date)
Criminal record check (CRC)
Valuable Additional Experience, Qualifications and Skills:
Early Childhood, Special Needs Educator
Other relevant work experience in a camp or sports education/coaching environment, childcare experience, group management, etc.
